New RCMP member’s first post in Canso

December 31, 2020  By Lois Ann Dort

CANSO — Over the past year the Guysborough and Canso RCMP detachments have welcomed a few new faces. Among the new members is Cst. Jordan Bruce, who is starting his RCMP career in Canso.

Cst. Bruce arrived in Canso to take up his first RCMP post on Dec. 4, 2019. Since that time, he has often been spotted at events in the community, such as the Bluenose II arrival this past September. He’s also been featured in this newspaper’s pages on several occasions.

When asked why he decided upon a career in the RCMP, he stated in an email interview, “I wanted a job that would offer a variety of opportunities in terms of work environments and day-to-day activities. I also wanted a job where I could be physically active and participate in community events.”

There may be other career paths that could fulfill those objectives, but Bruce has found this post satisfying. “I find this job rewarding in the sense that there is an incredible amount of freedom, and that I am able to help others regularly.”

As for challenges, Bruce stated, “I haven’t had anything overly challenging yet, thankfully. As it’s such a big area we police and there are so few officers, the job entails a lot of confidence and knowledge that could otherwise be attained from other members.”

Any new position takes some getting used to and Bruce said he enjoys the area and he’s “made many friends ? everyone is extremely friendly and helpful.”

When not on the job Bruce spends his free time on music and sports. “I play piano and guitar in my free time and grew up playing a number of different sports, from basketball and volleyball, to track and field.”

For a first year on the job like no other, Bruce has settled into his post in Canso.
